Self-Portrait: In Flow
Project type
Woodworking
Date
April 2025
Location
Portsmouth, Va
This sculptural stool is a meditation on transformation, memory, and the strength found in
vulnerability. Constructed from salvaged bentwood rocking chair parts, its curvilinear form
contrasts sharply with the rigidity of military life, representing a new chapter defined by artistic
freedom and fluid self-expression. The dowel and screw holes—some left raw, others filled with
bronze and copper—are intentionally preserved as markers of past use, celebrating imperfection,
resilience, and a life continuously reshaped.
The upholstered seat incorporates a patchwork textile made from fabric scraps collected
throughout the artist’s time in art school, alongside pieces of her old military uniforms. This tactile
fusion acknowledges the inextricable presence of military experience while embracing a creative,
evolving identity.
