Mixed media sculpture

Redemption is an unapologetic confrontation with the enduring legacy of white supremacy,
captured through the form of a life-sized kneeling figure draped in a Ku Klux Klan robe. The
absence of eye holes strips the figure of individual identity, shifting the focus from person to
ideology—an embodiment of hate, regret, and the potential for reckoning. The bowed head and
kneeling posture speak to a state of despair, remorse, and possible submission to change.
As the viewer moves around the sculpture, they discover an open surgical site on the figure’s
back. The operation in progress involves the removal of a pig spine—symbolic of moral rot and
dehumanization—and its replacement with a new spine that honors the values and resilience of
people of color, the LGBTQIA+ community, and a redefined vision of patriotism.
The surgical instruments are crafted from silver-plated copper and brass, accented with browntoned
silicone, subtly indicating that the transformative act is being performed by a person of
color. The piece is made from foam, with hand-sewn garments and meticulously fabricated tools,
merging craft and concept into a visceral call for self-examination, accountability, and hope for
radical change.
